Chapter 9 - Deleted Scenes
Do you agree with the director's decisions to omit these scenes from the film?
In my opinion I don't believe that the directors decision to cut out these scenes from the movie was justified. The director (Baz Lurhamnn) said that he had cut out the scenes because after Gatsby's death he wanted to solely focus on Nick and Gatsby's relationship and how Nick was the only true friend Gatsby had. However the scene where Nick talks to Tom in the end helps to prove this point. In the book Tom says to Nick "He (Wilson) was crazy enough to kill me if I hadn't told him who owned the car... He ran over Myrtle like you'd run over a dog and never even stopped his car." (Fitzgerald,178). From this discussion in the book the reader can see that Tom had actually thought that Gatsby was the one driving the car and that Daisy had never told him otherwise proving Daisy didn't care about Gatsby and was basically the cause of his death. Cutting out the scene with Nick's talk with Jordan also is a very important part because this part shows that the people that Gatsby surrounded himself with were very self absorbed just like Jordan. In this scene one could also compare Nick to Gatsby and what Gatsby's life would have been like if he had just moved on from Daisy. After leaving Jordan, Nick states "Angry and half in love with her, and tremendously sorry, I turned away" (Fitzgerald,177). This lines shows that although Nick was still in love with Jordan he knew that she wasn't a good person and wouldn't be good for him so he left which is what Gatsby should have done. By cutting out scenes from the movie, the director took away from some very key points that Fitzgerald was trying to make. Miranda Martin
